Bereavement charity run by Clinical Psychologists
Looking for Volunteer Bereavement Support Group Facilitators (Oxford) - NOW CLOSED

The Loss Foundation is a registered charity specialising in providing bereavement support for people whose loved ones die of cancer. The charity is run by volunteer clinical psychologists (qualified and in training), doctors and other professionals.

Our wonderful charity team is expanding and we are looking to take on more compassionate, reliable and conscientious volunteers with excellent communications skills and an interest in helping others.

Volunteer roles involve co-facilitating bereavement support groups and events for people whose loved ones have died from cancer; having supervision with co-facilitators (clinical psychologists), and contributing to the development and growth of the charity’s support. Training is provided in line with the Department of Health’s Standard of Care for Bereavement Support.

The successful candidates will have excellent organisational skills, flexibility, and enthusiasm for learning more about bereavement support. Volunteers will receive scheduled supervision. The charity offers excellent training and opportunities for people who are keen to pursue careers in psychology.

Being part of The Loss Foundation means being part of a happy and supportive team. We are passionate about offering the best possible care to an often-ignored population. We ask for at least a 1-year commitment. You can find out more about the charity at http://www.thelossfoundation.org

Please email Erin Thompson, Director and Clinical Psychologist, at erin@thelossfoundation.org with a copy of your CV and a cover letter by 5pm on the 20th November. Successful candidates will be invited to interview on 3rd December in the evening.

When and where are the support events held?
Our bereavement support groups are run across three venues in London and we have one base in Oxford. Support groups are held on a monthly basis in each location (so three support groups a month in London and one in Oxford). You can see our website for the exact locations and dates. We also have monthly coffee mornings in London, which we also facilitate – these are our most popular events! We are looking for a warrior of compassion to join our Oxford team to run monthly support groups which are held in St John’s College, Oxford.

What does training involve?
Training will involve attending an evening workshop and observing support groups. All volunteers are given a training manual and are supported in their learning of running the support groups.

How much time will I have to give?
All of our volunteers work full-time elsewhere so we appreciate how busy life can be for our team. Most of our facilitators run approximately 4-6 events a year, but this can be more if times are busy. We are very flexible and have a rota scheduled every few months. We ask for at least a one-year commitment in volunteering as it takes time to get up and running with training.

Do I have to be a psychologist of doctor to volunteer?
Absolutely not! We have a lot of psychologists and other health professionals onboard but this is not a requirement of joining our organisation.

I have a question that wasn’t answered
I knew we would forget something! Send your question to erin@thelossfoundation.org and we’ll get it answered asap!
