Due to word count error, only got pass in conversion course

Postby zzgb » Thu Sep 28, 2017 11:39 am

Hello all

I am writing to ask your opinion on whether my situation is salvageable.

I got 65% in my unrelated undergrad degree. I then did an MSc conversion course over 2 years (part time for monetary reasons), and got distinctions in pretty much everything except dissertation.
My dissertation was a merit grade, however due to a stupid mis-reading of info on my part they took it down to a pass grade. I had accidentally misread the word count info (there were two different handbooks, one said abstract was included in word count, the other said it wasn't- unfortunately I got my info from the wrong handbook. During my write up haze my boyfriend of 6 years broke up with me, and between this and balancing my full-time and additional part-time jobs my brain misread so I didn't include the abstract in the word count and subsequently went over!).

I have been working part-time as an honorary assistant psych for several months and was doing so well on my way until this happened!

Do you guys have any advice on whether this is redeemable? For example with further study? Naturally I shouldn't have exceeded the word count, however it is so sad to think such a stupid error on my part might completely throw me out of the game now!

Thank you
zzgb

As there were two different handbooks, surely there's grounds for you to appeal?

I did, however they said I should have not only looked at the programme handbook (which was where I got my info), but the specific dissertation handbook, and were quite strict about this.

Through the official appeals process, or just in terms of protesting?

I emailed the programme leader, supervisor etc- so not the formal appeals, but just protesting. You think it's worth a shot going the formal process? Hmm I hadn't thought of this. Thank you, will look into this now.

I would definitely formally appeal - it's unacceptable the course had conflicting info and didn't bring it to your attention! Good luck!

I agree completely. I would push as hard and as far as you can go with that appeal.

Definitely appeal. That's their error, not yours.

Make sure you have copies to hand of both the handbooks, so you can evidence the conflicting information you were given.

:o Another saying definitely appeal- what have you got to lose and it seems like an honest mistake. Do either of the handbooks make reference to one being the specific one to follow?

Definitely formally appeal. I teach at a University and varying information in two handbooks is the kind of stuff that wakes us up in cold sweats! You definitely have grounds.
