Re: Mental Health Nurse working towards Counselling Psychology

Hi all, I was asked by private message how I was getting on, so I thought I'd provide an update. I've firmly decided on the Psychology rather than Counselling/Psychotherapy route for all the reasons above in this thread. There's just so much more scope to do teaching, research, leadership, managemen...

Re: Mental Health Nurse working towards Counselling Psychology

Hi latelifechanger, I suspect the "circumstantial/practical factors" you mention largely predict what routes we take, in fact, for the very reasons you give in your post and that were discussed in my post above; money makes the world go round, and there's nothing really to stop you being an ultra fl...

Re: Mental Health Nurse working towards Counselling Psychology

Thanks MarkM. "It's what you make of it" seems to be what everyone I'm talking to is saying, really (as did you); that whether you do Clinical Psychology or Counselling Psychology the landscape remains largely the same. You make your own concerted effort to practice and research how you want to (whe...

Re: Mental Health Nurse working towards Counselling Psycholo

Thanks for your thoughts. It's been a bit of a meandering, reflective thread - almost more a journal really - and from the last two posts it's obviously come across to some that I'm only interested in delivering therapy. In fact, that's simply my primary interest as someone who always wants to stay ...

Re: Mental Health Nurse working towards Counselling Psycholo

Time for an update, after some research, reflection and study that has progressed matters somewhat. I didn't get the IAPT job as (I feel) I didn't demonstrate enough understanding and use of the CBT framework, plus the interview was a little awkward- I perhaps came across as a little excitable rathe...

Re: Maintaining Nursing Registration as an HI Therapist?

After my IAPT interview I'll answer this for myself for the benefit of anyone considering the training:

Maintenance of registration of the core profession can be kept up by doing IAPT work, and in fact is necessary for the role, otherwise a KSA is required.

Re: struggling to find a job

To add to the good advice of other posters, a little more from the specific to the general: - Try and visit the places you interview for in advance. Remember some names, ask questions, sniff out the culture, gently schmooze in a non-greasy way, and get your face remembered. Find out what you need to...

Re: Maintaining Nursing Registration as an HI Therapist?

I felt people with core professions who had moved into IAPT would more likely know the answer. Not to worry, I'll probably ask my interviewers.

Re-registration involves a Return to Practice course with clinical placements and university assignments.

Maintaining Nursing Registration as an HI Therapist?

Hello all! I've not been able to find the answer to this question on the interwebs, so I put it to you knowledgeable folk: I am applying for a trainee HI job at the moment. I am a mental health nurse and would like to keep my options open by maintaining my RMN registration. Besides, I'm rather attac...

Re: lost with where to go next

I come from a clinical background so I am considering training to be a mental health nurse, but I don't know where that will lead and what I can do from there. I'm an MH nurse looking at Counselling Psychology at the moment, so feel free to ask whatever specific questions you like and I'll do my be...

Re: Self-conscious when facilitating groups

My nursey tips for facilitating groups, having worked with people with dementia for years (as Terry Pratchett said, partly by trial, but mainly by error) and very much echoing the previous posters: Seriously, be yourself. Tell yourself: there are already a zillion extroverted, dramatic, all singing ...

Re: Mental Health Nurse working towards Counselling Psycholo

Thanks hs577. I do prefer the thought of a course with a lot of clinical hours, personal development and the relational focus, so that does put further weight on the side of Counselling Psychology- since of course Clinical Psychology did flit through my mind when I started investigating all this. I ...

Re: Mental Health Nurse working towards Counselling Psycholo

Thanks hs577, your input here and on Marlowe's thread is enthusing and bringing up important topics. Counselling Psychology seems the best fit for you (or at the very least it seems like you’ve decided on this) I'm pretty sure those are two different things, so don't be afraid to give your own opini...

Re: "Eating disorders" tips for interview and potential job

Any tips for support work type role in eating disorders field with adults? Some advice from a mental health nurse: - Put 'eating disorders' into a search on NHS Jobs and look at the Person Specifications and Job Descriptions. This will tell you what knowledge to research, what skills you need to sh...
