I think that generally there is very little research looking at level of competence in any situation, so I am not surprised you couldn't find any looking at age too. I might diasgree with you there. I might be interesting to know if there was any research looking at the relationship between the age of trainees/qualifieds and their level of competence. Had a quick look but couldn't see anything?

I'm also starting the doctorate this year and would probably be considered relatively young (23). I agree with Peach's post, particularly in relation to the point that you don't need to be operating at the level of a fully qualified to enter training. Firstly, I think what seems to be happening here...
