Recruiting research participants on clinpsy.org.uk

Post by Ruthie » Tue Mar 27, 2007 10:27 am

As a number of our members are carrying out research projects online, we thought it might be helpful for everyone to have a little guidance. So these are the rules if you want to recruit participants via clinpsy.org.uk.

Firstly, to say - people are very welcome to advertise their projects here, provided that they are studying psychology or an applied or practitioner psychology qualification at a university in the UK, and their ethical approval explicitly includes recruitment via the internet.

If you are not doing your research as part of a psychology course at a UK university, then you need to email clinpsyforum@gmail.com or send a PM to an admin or a moderator to get approval before posting. If you are at a university outside the UK, your ethics needs to explicitly say that you can recruit participants from the UK via the internet.

If you are advertising here (or indeed anywhere on the internet) then it is important to have some basic information to say who you are and what your research is about, and to show that it is legitimate and that participants will be safeguarded.

So - if you are advertising...please include:

- Your name and a means of contacting you (normally your contact details should be given on the website of your questionnaire, which will allow you to keep some anonymity here, but please consider any issues that revealing your identity to participants will create)
- Your affiliation (e.g. your university)
- If you're a student, who is supervising you
- Who has given ethical approval for your study and that it includes consent to recruit via the internet
- An outline of the study and who you would like to participate

Please post one post in the Academic and Research Forum. Duplicate posts just tend to annoy other forum members rather than get you more participants, so they will be deleted!

PS. If you're advertising on the internet anywhere other than clinpsy.org.uk - it is usually considered good "netiquette" to ask a moderator prior to linking to anything off-site such as a survey, but none of the clinpsy mods would say no, so please feel free to recruit following the above guidance.

Please do not reply to other people's research recruitment threads with links to your own. This is spamming and will be deleted.

When recruiting participants via the forum you must comply with the BPS guidance about conducting research online. You can read a copy here.
