Career progression for PWP

hi I have completed the post grad cert in pwp IAPT low intensity interventions last month and working as a pwp, I am also a registered mental health nurse RMN and qualified sept 2008. I am wondering what my career options would be as i want to further my career but feel that im now just stuck being a pwp as a band 5 as there doesnt seem to be a bridge between a pwp and a high intensity worker. any advice would be welcomed thanks.

Unfortunately this is something that I have heard many times before (although, saying this, I am about to start the PWP trainee post in 2 weeks time!).

There certainly is room to progress within IAPT, however, I think there is a common misconception that once qualifying as a PWP, you can progress to become a high intensity trainee, but in reality, I think you need to build up your experience for a while first.

The following link directs you to the job description and person specification for a high intensity trainee post, so may help you to work out what experience/skills you need:

Having completed your nursing training is also advantageous, because in many NHS trusts you need this as a pre-requisite to completing any CBT courses. It may be possible for you to do an additional CBT course alongside working as a nurse, and this wouldn’t just be the low-intensity work that you have learnt within IAPT, you could specialise e.g. in CAMHS or psychosis.

As previously mentioned it is a big adavantage that you are also a RMN and in terms of your career progression, i would say it largely depends upon what kind of previous experience you have. I think there's been a few roles as primary care mental health workers floating about which are at band 6 which would utilise your skills as a RMN and PWP. This might involve working in SPA. Many services also have locality leads which is a PWP with managerial responsibilities at a B6. There is also specialist IAPT sites now e.g. veterans. And whilst there's no bridge to become a High Intensity Therapist, there's nothing to stop you applying for HIT trainee posts as i know plenty of PWP's who have got on the course. It's worth considering what you actually want to do and then speak to your manager about your PDP in order to help you get there. I would say whilst i don't think there's a clear progression plan for PWP's, i think experience as a PWP can certainly help get you to where you want to be.

You are eligible to apply for high intensity training after 2 years of being a pwp
