Eating disorder experience

Post by Priya » Sat Mar 22, 2014 7:35 pm

Hi

I am very near to finishing my undergrad psychology degree and i am very much interested in eating disorders however for past few months i have contacted endless amounts of clinics to try and gain some experience but i have not been successful.

Does anyone have any advice? Where could i look to apply?

I don't know if you are only looking for paid work but I wonder if Beat have any volunteering oppurtunities?

Alternatively could you try and speak to a psychologist or ward manager who works the clinic and see if they can help?

Lastly is there any research being done local to you eg I know that in the past Oxford used to do some and it wouldn't surprise me if they still do and I'm sure other big universities will have research being done that may be looking for volunteers?

It might be worth looking at opportunities listed on your local authority& NHS recruitment sites - I manage a county wide service that regularly works closely with CAMHS family therapists on eating disorder referrals with the aim of preventing tier 4 admission - the work is very much hands on with this client group.

Try private hospitals too. The Priory, Huntercombe and Ellern Mede are starting points.

Keep your eye on the NHS jobs page for bank healthcare/nursing assistants who work across a number of wards. I work on the NHS bank and have worked on an eating disorders ward.

I was in a similar position to you when I was an undergrad and when I graduated. Due to the confidential nature of mental health services in general and ED units, it's almost impossible to get a work experience placement/voluntary work directly on a this type of ward.

Like others on here have said, the best way might be to look for a paid Healthcare Assistant or Support Worker role, on the NHS website or private healthcare companies. You might need a little bit of related experience to get one of these jobs. So perhaps look into volunteering with charities such as Mind or Rethink. Even roles such as the one you mentioned as a telephone mentor for Beat would be amazing experience. It doesn't have to be directly related. There are often voluntary roles within the NHS, it may not be directly within a mental health unit, but would still be great clinical experience.

I'm with SparkyMarky, I was a bank healthcare assistant but worked pretty much full time on an eating disorders inpatient ward. I'm now an assistant psychologist in a specialist eating disorders team!

I used to work in a CAMHS inpatient ward and have experience working with young people with eating disorders, this also involves meal modelling and supporting them as they eat. Another avenue for you to consider.
