Acceptable to chase academic reference to new institution?

Post by puggins » Fri Oct 13, 2017 4:43 pm

Hi all,

My previous academic referee gave me an amazing reference last year, and obviously I'm eager to request for her to act as my referee again. However, after a couple of unreturned emails I've learnt she is now at a university in Norway. Is it acceptable to chase her at her new institution and request for her to act as my reference?

I worry it may be almost stalker-ish and inappropriate, but also the reference was so good and I don't know anyone else who could comment as meaningfully.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has been in a similar position and can provide advice on what they did.

I would think it would be fine. After all, all she has to do is resubmit what she wrote last year. Very little work for her probably.

Agreed. Also, I think you can ask to reuse a previous reference.
