Supervising PhDs while training

So this might be an incredibly naive/ optimistic question but I have recently finished my PhD and am due to start clinical training in October. Thing is that my research is in a really specialist area that I am quite well known in and I have had several requests to supervise PhD students as a 2nd supervisor. Is this possible while training? I would like to keep my hand in but not over commit.

Not sure from a time-commitment front, but I'm fairly sure a lot of DClin courses forbid any additional income via private practice (I presume revenue from investments and share dividends are fine). It may be best to check with the course whether or not this is even allowed.

I personally wouldn't as I think training is a pretty full-on job by itself, and I'm sure you wouldn't want to be less intellectually present for your potential supervisees than you might usually be. I had asked whether I could continue offering private training and was refused by my training trust. Looking back I'm pretty glad they did so.

I think the role of second supervisor varies a lot in terms of how much of time commitment it is. I have friends whose first supervisor is really unavailable so they rely far more on their second supervisor, other supervisory teams will give more equal input, others maybe see their second supervisor once a year. My second supervisor was super engaged and attended all of my supervision, commented on all my drafts- but that was agreed at the outset when we decided how we would work together. And he was definitely unusual in my department- all my colleagues had far less input from their second than I did.

So I think it depends on the departments expectations for the role but also how the first supervisor works. It would be worth speaking to the first supervisor and getting a sense of how the supervisory relationship would work from their side, what their expectations would be etc. As I think it varies a lot by institution.
